WTF is up with embedding tweets here? I pick up the code, pit in the post, and these are the results - just about every damn time.
1. Post displays HTML code.
2. (five minutes later) Post now displays tweet text with hyperlinks
3. (five minutes later) Frustrated, take a screen shot of the tweet and add it to the post with an explanation, cursing Kinja.
4. (five minutes later) Embed success - Tweet is displayed.
5. Edit post to remove remove screenshot.
6. (five minutes later ) blank - no content in post.
Is this how it's supposed to work?

For me, this post was the last post on Kinja, the website wouldn't display anything beyond it, for quite a while.

I think the very act of editing the post makes Kinja reassess the processing of html, but I'm not 100% sure in what respects. I think any text it has then "converted" gets eaten on a second edit.

I'll try it again, and include nothing but the tweet code.

Something looks off with the code. I went back to the original tweet, copied the embed code, dumped it into HTML view, saved and voila .

Where are you copying the embed code from?

I'm taking it from here:
And this is what I copy:

My experience with tweets is that it takes about 3 edits for Kinja to recognise that its a tweet and format it properly on the page. Post, edit, save, edit, save, edit save and its fine.

Well..
I switched to "html," then hit enter after the paste of the code... It came right up.
(for now)
